Helping the Open University “GoGreen”
A decentralised environment requiring innovative tools to coordinate behaviour change.
The Open University were aware of the potential savings possible through staff enagement, but lacked the resources and skills to implement a successful programme. ZapCarbon provided an excellent answer to their needs.
The challenge
- The Open University spend over £2million / year in energy, a highly significant cost which is rising
- The Facilities department appreciate that Behaviour Change can save money, but were unsure as to exactly how to go about it
- Previous energy-saving campaigns had been weak and relatively ineffective
The Solution
- Having tried to run energy-saving campaigns themselves, the university realised a specialised skill-set was required.
- The university invested in our services hoping to save at least 5% of their energy consumption through staff engagement
- Recruitment and training of volunteer champions from across the university- Campaigns run to engage the wider staff population
- Themed monthly campaigns – All run and managed through ZapCarbon online engagement system
The Result
Commissioning a 2 year programme allowed the OU to create a well-developed and embedded scheme. The ZapCarbon online engagement platform was central to spreading the word, creating and quantifying results.
In Summary:
- 60 champions recruited and trained
- “GoGreen” branding developed
- Interactive online software launched
- Monthly themed actions taken by champions to their workplaces
- Online quantification of activity and savings achieved
- Savings exceeding expectations
