How do we help with NI186 ?
NI 186 solutions:
National Indicator 186 measures the Energy use and Carbon emissions per capita within a region.
Local authorities and councils are being charged with reducing Carbon impacts within their region, but are equally often left in the dark as to how to make significant changes.
Just how does one change behaviour with regard to energy use at home ?
CHANGING ENERGY HABITS
This is one question that ZapCarbon answers exceedingly well. Through our online customised services, our entire focus is on helping people save energy at home. This means we are very well placed to help local authorities address their NI186 targets.
Our success comes in helping people “think” energy.
Using the online ZapCarbon system, people can firstly find out whether they are a Gas-Guzzler or Eco-Angel though entering a couple of electricity meter readings.
From here, people can take steps to improve their rating by following the room-by-room energy-saving advice. Entering further meter readings online shows them how their consumption is dropping.
This ability to measure savings directly is key to the ZapCarbon system. As well as providing very direct feedback on actions taken at home, it also allows one other very important thing - the ability to totalise everyone's savings to give a regional total.
CASE STUDY: Aylesbury Vale District Council
Working with AVDC since 2008, we have shown good rates of public engagement with the ZapCarbon system. Real savings have been generated and people have found the system useful valuable. Being online, people can see how well they compare to others too.
In addition to providing an excellent NI186 solution for the council, the users are also generating financial savings for themselves which arguably feed back into the local economy.
Overall the success at AVDC has shown that people power really does work. With ever-widening publicity, the level of savings is increasing daily in the region.
To put the potential Carbon savings in persepective, if only 2% of the AVDC region's population engaged with ZapCarbon, the savings generated would soon exceed the entire NI185 Estate Carbon-saving programme !
Of course 2% is just the start. With 20% of households currently recycling their waste because it is "the right thing to do", there is every reason to suppose that similarly high numbers will engage with energy saving.
