Save Energy in the Guest Room
Zap Rating
If you have a guest room, chances are it stands empty a lot of the time (unless you’re really popular of course…). It’s probably filled with things that haven’t quite made it to the loft yet, but seldom actually used.
Because of its part-time use, from an energy point of view the guest room is a golden opportunity to power down any unnecessary usage.
POSITIVE STEPS:
Heating:
Firstly, the biggest impact is likely to come from heating. Check how the heating is set in yours, and see if there’s opportunity to reduce it. If you’ve got the radiators on full blast, you’ll make some big savings by turning them down to a very low setting.
When they’ve been turned down, make sure you shut the door so as to keep the cooler air from leaking into the rest of the house.
Simply turning the radiator up a few hours before guests arrive should be sufficient to create a cozy room once again. In the meantime, you’ve made big savings and your guests can relish staying in a lower carbon household.
Electricals:
Just make sure that all electricals are switched off at the wall. Whether it’s a clock, TV or vintage Goblin Teasmade, they will all be consuming. So switch them off and save, save, save.
Draughts:
Chances are a draught in the guest room won’t get picked up nearly so soon as if it were say in your own room. And of course guests these days are too polite to say anything… So when checking over the guest room, take a moment to feel round for draughts, especially round the windows. They shouldn’t take too long to fix up.
