How to: Take Gas Meter Readings

Gas meters

The gas meter simply measures the volume of gas flowing into your house. All gas passes through the meter before being distributed to the boiler and cooker.

Generally gas will be measured in Cubic Meters (m3), or Cubic Feet (ft3). The first thing you need to do is find out what your meter reads in.

Getting the units right is very important, so take a look at your meter and see what it says. There should be writing on its face saying either Cubic Meters (m3), or Cubic Feet (ft3).

If yours is in Cubic meters (all modern ones are), then the reading is very straightforward.

The numbers should have a decimal point (or sometimes a comma). The numbers after the decimal point often have a red boundary around them or are red themselves.

In the example below the meter has both the decimal point and the red shading. This means the meter reads: 2958.244 m3

Overall, the main thing to double-check is where the decimal point is. The rest is easy. We've made the website like most meters, with the bits after the decimal point in red.

If your meter measures in Cubic Feet, then it's equally simple. Because a cubic foot is quite small, gas companies measure in units of 100 cubic feet, showing the tens and units in red on the meter.

We've made our website like this too, so you enter readings in 100 cu ft and the red numbers are entered into the red section after the decimal point.

In the meter below the reading is 4806.34 (100 cu ft). You can ignore the little dial on the right.
