EU-wide legislation kicks in today banning the import or distribution of the 100 Watt bulb

We've done a few calculations...

EU-wide legislation kicks in today banning the import or distribution of the 100 Watt bulb.

Yes, the dear old bright bulb that we all grew up with is officially now a collector's piece. It's time has clearly come now that we can light our way with much more efficient methods.

It's all obviously good news for the 18Watt energy-saving CFL, its like-for-like replacement. While there's always some people who won't like any change, it's worth considering for a moment just how much CO2 those 100W incadenscant bulbs have caused us.

We did a quick calculation on this: Assuming 5 bulbs per house on for 4 hours a day, across 25million households in the UK, those 100W bulbs are contributing 23,000 Tonnes of CO2 each DAY.

By contrast, replacing all these with 18W CFLs brings the daily total down to 4,140 Tonnes - ie: a saving of 18,860 Tonnes of CO2 per day.

Over a year the savings from this switch-over tots up to an incredible 6.9 million Tonnes of CO2.

Who says small steps don't add up...
